Welcome back to returning families and welcome to new families!  I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable summer! I am very excited to get to know you and your children better. Grade 3 will be a busy year, filled with fun and learning!  I can’t wait to get started!

I have a few things I would like to share with you:

Homework:
I believe reading every night at home to be very important and beneficial.  I ask that students read at home every night for at least 20 minutes.  Our Home Reading Program is directly related to a Reading Program I will be using in the classroom, which I will explain at the “Meet the Teacher” night.  I plan to have the Home Reading Program begin in October.

As far as other homework that may be assigned…
I anticipate that it will consist mostly of work that was unfinished during class time.  Please know that I will always try to provide students with class time to get their work done.  Other homework may include gathering materials for projects.

Art:
Some of the Art activities I have planned may be a little messy.  We will have opportunities to paint, use chalk pastels, etc.  As a parent of a child who attended a Catholic elementary school, I understand the stress parents feel when their children come home “wearing’ their “art” on their uniforms.  I, therefore, recommend that your child have an art smock that can be kept at school.  This can be one that is purchased from a store or an old shirt that is baggy enough to fit over your child’s uniform.

P.E.
On Mondays and Tuesdays we are scheduled to have P.E. first thing in the morning.  To save time, I ask that students come to school dressed in their P.E. strips on these two days.  Once P.E. class is over, I will give them time to change into their uniforms.

On Wednesdays and Fridays there is not enough time to change into gym strips, however, students will be asked to change into runners.  Please send your child with a pair of runners that can stay at school.

It is almost June! We are now in the homestretch!
I just want to mention a few things...

On Thursday, the students went home with a Timeline Project to work on. All pictures, writing, and colouring is due on Thursday, June 8. Students are not to cut or glue anything. They will do that part in class on June 8th. Please encourage your child to work on this project a little at a time so that they are not left with the whole project the night before it's due.

We will be going on a field trip this coming Monday, May 29. Please make sure your child is dressed for the hot weather (summer uniform, a hat, sunscreen) and that s/he wears comfortable shoes. Also, please pack an easy and quick snack and a bottle of water in a small backpack that your child will be able to manage.

We have been practicing for our St. Anthony of Padua Assembly.  The assembly will take place on Thursday, June 8 at 9:15am.  Please join us if you can!

Just a reminder that the school has organized a fundraiser called "Money in a Bag." We are asking for donations of gently used items such as clothes, linens, coats, jackets, bedding, belts, shoes, backpacks, and purses. These items will be given to the Canadian Diabetes Association and in return, our school  will receive some money per bag.  Please bring your donations in regular black garbage bags (approx 26" x 36") to the school entrance this Monday, April 24. Thank you for your support!
